EPEIUS

Epeius grew from the smaller sculpture Olympia, expanding the gesture to a scale where the horse becomes almost architectural.

I crowdsourced the name on Instagram. A woman in England offered Epeius, the name of her Thoroughbred racehorse. I immediately knew that was the name, before I knew anything about its history.

Epeius was the builder of the Trojan Horse, working with the aid of Athena, goddess of wisdom and craft. He was also a boxer described in Homer’s Iliad. I loved discovering that the name I had chosen intuitively already held the horse, the maker, strength and craft within it.

At this scale, the marks of my hands remain visible across the surface. What began as a quick, direct gesture in clay becomes something monumental without losing the immediacy of its making.
