PORTENT

I began Portent in the summer of 2020. The world felt heavy with portentous energy, and I found myself drawn to the bison.

There was something about their substance that I needed. Their immense physical weight, their groundedness and stability felt like a counterpoint to the uncertainty of that time.

I spent time at North Bridger Bison, studying the animals and working from life. What interested me was not only their mass, but the gravity of their presence. The bison seemed utterly rooted in itself. I wanted Portent to carry that same weight and groundedness.

Later I returned to Portent and cast it in glass. I was curious about what would happen when this animal, originally conceived around ideas of weight and substance, was translated into a material defined by light.

The form remained the same, but its presence changed completely. Glass brought translucency and luminosity to the bison’s mass, while the steel elements created a tension between the ethereal and the industrial.
